Homemade Citrus-Infused Vinegar Cleaning Spray

I was first inspired to make my own all-purpose cleaning spray by my friend, Jessica. As the mom of a preschooler who could go through one 3lb bag of clementines per week if I let her, I take extra joy in making my own cleaner because 1. I’m making use of something that would otherwise be discarded and 2. it’s zero waste. What’s leftover after straining can be composted.

This homemade citrus peel and vinegar cleaning spray is all-natural, effective, smells good, and the recipe couldn’t be simpler. I keep a mason jar in the fridge to stash the peels throughout the week and make a new batch whenever it’s full. I mostly use clementines, but any mixture of citrus peels will work! Orange, lemon, grapefruit, lime, etc.

If you would like to get creative with it, you can also add botanicals with antiseptic properties. Fresh herbs such as lavender, rosemary, thyme, sage and mint are great additions. In the winter months, I’ve used a sprig of pine and a few cloves for a nice holiday twist. Use whatever you have on hand, in any combination that sounds good to you!

Homemade Citrus-Infused Vinegar Cleaning Spray

Ingredients

1 quart mason jar stuffed with citrus peels of your choice

White distilled vinegar

Water

Fresh herbs *optional

Directions

  1. Pack your mason jar with citrus peels and any chosen herbs, then fill to the top with vinegar. Screw on lid and set the jar on your countertop to infuse for 1-3 weeks.

  2. Separate the rinds from the vinegar by pouring through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.

  3. Pour the infused vinegar into a spray bottle, filling halfway. Fill the rest with water to create a 50/50 solution. Replace the cap, give it a shake and it’s ready to use!

Notes: I would not recommend using this cleaner on natural stone like granite or marble. The acidity from the vinegar and citrus peels could cause etching. If in doubt, test a small area first.
