The Cabin: Progress Update #1!

A few days later than promised, (I accidentally left my computer at work on my main blogging night!) I'm bringing you updates on the renovations at the Cabin! If you don't know which Cabin I'm talking about, I invite you to first read The Little Cabin by the River and The Cabin: Making the Best Use of Limited Square Footage to learn the background and some of my plans for this project. Beware: This post is photo heavy!

I'll start you off with a little reminder of what the outside of the cabin looked like when my parents bought it.

Log Cabin Exterior - Before

After a new roof, removal of the damaged screening, here's what she's looking like today. Much improved, but as you can see, still a construction site.

The Cabin Exterior - In Progress

The picture below shows that the new roof was built at a higher pitch. The pitch of the old roof was so low, it was nearly flat. The new, higher pitched roof should help to drain water and snow off better. In this photo you can also see that the garage is actually a real garage now! No longer a bunch of sticks on a concrete foundation that had been stripped by robbers. My parents originally wanted to do the garage siding in red and they asked me what color I would suggest for the roofing for the garage and the cabin. I convinced them to switch the siding color to a chocolate brown to match the cabin and accent both building with a red roof. You don't see many red metal roofs, but I think it looks great!

Here's a little reminder of the garage we started with:

The garage is currently home to a mess of building supplies and a corn planter. There's nothing a farmer loves more than another empty garage at his disposal.

Here's a few more photos of the exterior. All of the windows have been replaced. One of the changes in my plans were reframe a few windows to match the size and placement of the another window on that same wall. Creating symmetry does so much for both the exterior facade and the interior design. If you start with a beautiful, balanced building shell, you will not have as much to overcome when it's time to place furniture and decorate!  This is why I love space planning, it all goes hand in hand!

Standing at the back of the cabin and looking towards the front of the lot. The concrete steps used to lead to a back door, which was eliminated to make room for a laundry area. They used logs from where they moved an opening in the interior to patch the door opening closed. From this angle, you can hardly see it and once the cabin has been restained, it will disappear even more.

And here's one more exterior shot before we take things inside. This is the view from the front porch, and why I call it the cabin by the river.

Ok, now we'll take things inside. What has been completed to this point:

  • Wall paneling and linoleum floors have removed
  • All non load-bearing interior walls have been demo'd
  • Removed old insulation and replaced with new
  • Rewired and roughed in new electrical
  • Installed new HVAC system
  • New plumbing has been roughed in
  • New interior walls have been framed
  • (Some) drywall has been hung

Onto the pictures!

So there you have it! The progress on the cabin up to this point. Next will be finishing the drywall, flooring and painting and then it's onto cabinetry!

What do you think of the progress so far?
